Kinds of vitamins and supplements

There are many different kinds of vitamins and new vitamins are found everyday. At present we only know of the following vitamins:

A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B10, B11, B12, B13, B15, B17, C, D, E, F, G, H, K, L, M, P, T and U.

As our body requires all these vitamins to function it is hard to obtain every one of these vitamins by eating a well balance diet. Most of us have a busy lifestyle where we work from 9am to5pm, and then we may have a social drink and a smoke. So how are we supposed to have a balance diet? This is where vitamins supplements can help. Most vitamins supplements have been extracted from natural foods.

Here are some examples of where vitamins are extracted from:

Vitamins A - fish-liver oil.

Vitamins B - yeast or liver.

Vitamins C - small berries in roses.

Vitamins E – soybeans or maize.

Some manufacturer may produce vitamins which are synthetically manufactured. Synthetic vitamins are not always as effective as their naturally-derived equivalent. It is therefore recommended you only take vitamins which are naturally-derived.

Vitamin supplement should be well stored in a dark, cool place or they will ‘go off’ and loses it purpose. The best place to store vitamin supplements once the bottle is opened is in the refrigerator. Make sure it is in a container with a lid. A good hint is to put a few grains of rice in the container. This will prevent moisture for getting into the tablets.

The best time to take vitamins is during the day, after a meal. It is not recommended to take vitamins on an empty stomach as they will quickly passed out in you urine. Vitamins B and C can dissolve in water, while the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K can be stored in the body for up to 24 hours and can sometimes be stored in the liver for longer periods of time.

It is often that minerals are mistaken to be a kind of vitamins. The fact is, mineral is not a vitamin. Mineral can help the vitamins to work. The most important mineral are:

  • Calcium
  • Iodine
  • Iron
  • Magnesium
  • Phosphorus
  • Copper
  • Manganese
  • Chromium
  • Selenium
  • Zinc
